How to Keep Your Teeth Healthy

What is the first thing you notice about other people? Their hair, skin, what kind of clothes they are wearing or what is their posture? And what about their smile? According to many studies, teeth are the first thing people notice about you, so we can say that they have a really important social role. You are more likely to find people with nice teeth more interesting and more attractive, and it can be really distracting even if someone has a smallest piece of food stuck in their front teeth.

Teeth are also an important tool when it comes to our speech, as we would be unable to pronounce a lot of sounds without them, and besides that, they serve an important role when it comes to processing our food. This is why dental health is an important thing that you must think about always, as your teeth and your gums are a system that must function properly if you want to be a healthy individual. So, what are some important things that you should know when it comes to keeping your teeth healthy?

Cleanliness is next to godliness

It is the most important way of keeping your teeth clean, as a proper brush mechanically removes all food residue from the surface of our teeth and prevents the formation of plaque. It can also prevent a lot of gum related diseases, but only if you brush properly. In order to do that, you need to buy a brush that suits your needs. There are three types of toothbrushes: soft, medium, and hard, and usually the medium one will be enough for you, but if you are having certain gum problems, then you should consider buying a soft one. Your toothbrush should be changed every 3 months; that way, the bristles won’t become worn out, and this applies to electric toothbrushes, too.

You should brush your teeth two times a day: when you wake up and before you go to bed. This is a bare minimum, and you should really think about brushing after every bigger meal, if you can, of course. Brushing your teeth twice a day, for 2-3 minutes, will remove most of the bacteria that have developed in your mouth during the night and during the day. If you cannot brush your teeth, make sure to use mouthwash. While it won’t be able to physically clean your mouth, it will kill some of the bacteria and will give you fresh breath. Flossing is also important, as it will get rid of the food that got stuck in those hard to reach places you cannot reach with a toothbrush. Any toothpaste that you choose will be ok, as they are pretty much the same, so don’t think that buying an expensive one will solve your problems – it’s how you brush your teeth that matters.

You are what you eat

Your diet is the second most important thing that can help or ruin your teeth. If you are used to eating junk food and guzzling down soda drinks, then you are going to have a lot of problems, not just with teeth cavities. All that sugar, salt and fats will do all kinds of damage to your body, as they will cause you to gain weight rapidly, and may even cause you to develop type 2 diabetes. All that extra sugar in your mouth, without proper hygiene, is a perfect recipe for tooth decay, so if you cannot avoid these kinds of foods, make sure to rinse with ordinary water, as it will remove some of that sugar. It is true that it is hard to organize your time, but it is really important to know when, and what you are you going to eat. Do not skip your meals, and try to include some vegetables into every one of them, since it will give you all the vitamins and minerals you need. Instead of drinking soda beverages, buy freshly squeezed juice, without any sugar added, but even after those, rinse your mouth. If you follow all these instructions, not only will you be healthy, but your teeth will be in perfect shape, so the next time you visit your dentist, you will hear only good news.
