Blending in Barcelona: 4 Fashion Tips for Newcomers

Not all people find clothes fascinating, but if you’re attracted to this title, chances are that you’re a fashionista and that style is an important part of your life. As far as I’m concerned, this clothing obsession is only another, and a very suitable method of expressing your inner-self – some people use their art, some their vocabulary, while others use fashion.

Being one of the most desirable vacation locations in the whole of Europe (and this is some tough competition, because there are many beautiful spots to choose from), it’s completely natural for Barcelona to be a strong fashion current, as well. Other than gorgeous beaches and the beautiful sea, you’ll be able to see many cultural landmarks and stunning art – and the best way to do that is by wearing gorgeous clothes, so let’s see how Barcelonans do it.

European Influences

It’s very simple to spot foreigners, by which I mean non-Europeans, in Barcelona. For example, most Americans who visit this wonderful spot in the north of Spain are quite simple to single out because their outfits are sporty and casual, and not just on the beach.

If you want to avoid that classical tourist look without even carrying a camera on your neck and a map in your hands, you should pay a bit more attention to your clothes and select an outfit that’s more complicated than a pair shorts and a crop top.

Fabrics Selection

This tip is here mostly to address Barcelona’s temperature, although you’ll want to avoid cheap and synthetic fabrics either way. The average of their summer temperatures is above thirty degrees, so you need to stock up on clothes that are light and breezy.

If you need to do your vacation shopping, my suggestion is to do it in Barcelona – I’m absolutely positive that you’ll be able to find amazing clothes that are of high quality and, in accordance with the cutting edge fashion standards. Besides, the fabrics used for clothes that are popular there are already light; I found a few denim pieces that are unbelievably comfy and totally chic.

The Color Enigma

Well, anything goes. As far as Barcelonans are concerned, muted colors of autumn are their favorite palette. However, summer on the whole planet is colored with all sorts of shades, so it’s really your choice. The only condition  is for your choice to be appropriate to your age – if you’re in your teens feel free to go with garish colors, because teens there adore them; and, if you’re more mature, you should go with something more subtle and you’ll blend right in.

Dress Code

Considering the fact that there is a strong fashion current in Barcelona, don’t hesitate from dressing up a notch. Going for a meal there implies that you should look nice. Of course, this isn’t a necessity if you plan on grabbing a quick meal in the nearest fast food place, which is something I definitely wouldn’t recommend by the way, because their cuisine is something everyone should experience.

Anyway, attending parties and elegant dinners should come with a dress code, but there’s one more thing I should mention. If you do want to blend in, you should wear your beachwear on the beach only – there are so many tourist who pass by Barcelona’s most famous landmarks wearing wet sports shorts and tops or simply wearing their swimsuits, and that really doesn’t look good.

There’s one thing about lousy memories – they don’t seem to go away, and you don’t want that unpleasantness of people looking at you like you simply don’t belong there. Fitting in with the fashion standards of a certain location actually means that you have deep respect for their culture. Although Barcelona’s standards aren’t as comprehensive as perhaps some Asian standards, you should go the distance either way and look your finest. Besides, maybe this style center leaves its permanent mark on your personal fashion signature, and that’s reason alone to have fun and experiment.
