5 Ideas for a Small Apartment

Many people have to deal with living in a small space, whether it is a preference or a necessity. By choosing to live in a more urban area, we also choose to live in a smaller apartment, if not directly, then because of the cost of housing and living in big cities is greater than in less urban areas. With the sacrifice of space also come some design and storage challenges, and personal items can become hard to handle, so you could be running out of room. However, with a little imagination and practicality, these challenges can be overcome, and if you cannot add actual space to your apartment, then you can improve your storage options or add at least visual space to your place. So, by carefully planning and making use of every inch you own, you can make even the smallest apartment into the home you have always dreamed of.

Here are 5 ideas for making the most of your small apartment:

1.  Divide the space with furniture

If you live in a studio apartment, you are familiar with how difficult it is to organize a small space. So, to make the most of it, you should use furniture to divide it, and this is the best choice for designating different zones to your space. Dividing it using furniture is more practical and it creates a sense of unity between the two areas. You can, for example, use bookshelves to differentiate between, e.g., the living room space and the study. Or, you can designate zones in your apartment by simply clustering the furniture together in one place and thus creating the illusion of a larger space.

2.  Storage ideas

The best piece of advice here is to make use of the vertical space in your apartment. This means that you should get custom fitted kitchen cabinets and bookcases that go all the way up to the ceiling. Or, you can get double-duty furniture which will not take up more room but provide you with more storage options. An example would be hollow ottomans that can be used to hold magazines or phone chargers. The space underneath the bed or sofa can be used as additional storage space as well. Another good idea would be to have open storage spaces because they would at least visually enlarge the room – if not, add actual space to your apartment. They are also easy to accomplish since you only need to remove the doors of your cabinets and closets.

3.  Decoration ideas

A good way of visually expanding your space would be to use large pieces of art since they create the illusion of great space. Repetition of a single motive also creates the illusion of a bigger space. Another tip is to group your art together. However, if this is not to your liking, the easiest and perhaps most successful way of adding visual volume is to pick bright colors for your walls. They make the rooms appear brighter and bigger as well. So, any shade of white, orange or yellow would do the trick. When it comes to furniture, a nice idea is to use leggy furniture, even though it does not actually add room to your apartment, at least it makes it visually larger.

4.  Use of mirrors

Mirrors are another great partner when small space organization is in question. They give the impression of depth and expansion. Therefore, a well-placed mirror can visually enhance your room. Also, they take up no floor space, and that is why they are so frequently used. They also make the room appear brighter, which makes it more appealing.

5.  Bathroom ideas

Having a small bathroom can be a challenge for both decoration and storage options. So, if you are faced with the problem of a small bathroom, the use of vertical space would come in handy. You can also place a large mirror and at least make it look bigger. Or, you could choose to install modular bathrooms, modular bathroom pods, or prefabricated bathrooms.

While there is no rule as to how you should organize your own living space since all of us have our own personal preferences, you can try to apply some of the ideas listed and make the most use of your apartment in the best way you see fit. Keep in mind that you need to keep things very tidy and clean when living in a small apartment. Mold is a thing that people hear a lot of myths about but the truth is that it can get quite dangerous. It can get out of hand pretty fast in small spaces and cause a lot of troubles for the residents, both structural and health related.
